Welcome
As a teacher librarian, I have a responsibility to my students and colleagues to support the mission of the school in promoting the achievement of the students. The connection between the design of learning spaces and the learning outcomes is often overlooked (Shussman, 2017). In order to fulfil my role as an innovative educator, it is important to understand how pedagogical changes require new design solutions (Hughes & Elliott Burns, 2019).
My current library learning space was redesigned in 2015. It is well frequented by patrons as it is a safe and comfortable space to work and play in. However, in order to be considered an invaluable, collaborative learning space some changes will be necessary. This webpage is a record of my journey in the analysis and redesign of this space.
The webpage is organised into two main sections – the design problem and the design solution.
Design Problem
Reflection: initial author thoughts on the chosen learning space
Tour: an evaluation of the learning space in its current form
Map: a visual and written explanation of the evaluation findings
Meaning-making: a critical commentary that reviews the findings in relation to relevant education policy and theories
Design Solution
Reflection: a critical analysis of another library space
Design Response: detailed images of the proposed redesign with suggested timetable
Design Solution: a written proposal outlining the participatory design process and justifying the design solution
